The prototype C-212 flew for the first time on 25 March 1971. Designed to replace much older aircraft
such as the Ju52 and DC-3, the Aviocar was in effect a miniature cargo plane with passenger-carrying
capability. In the airliner role the 100 Series was configured for the common 19-seat market and enjoyed
commercial succes among commuter airlines with 135 examples constructed.

Equipped with uprated Garret AirResearch TPE-331-10 engines and 12% increase in Max T.O. Weight, the
200 Series took to the air for the first time on 30 April 1978. Sales of all version had reached 390
by February 1986, evenly split between comerical and military contracts.
